چکیده
Figure. Transverse section of an Armillifer armillatus larva from the liver of the patient (immigrant) from Togo. Typical for pentastomid lesions, the parenchyma shows focal hemorrhage around the parasite and no inflammatory cellular reaction (1). There is also focal destruction of the trabecular liver parenchyma. Subcuticular gland cells of the parasite are visible, and the intestine is clearly discernable in the center (hematoxylin and eosin stain, original magnification ×20).

Transmission of Armillifer armillatus Ova at Snake Farm, The Gambia, West Africa
Visceral pentastomiasis caused by Armillifer armillatus larvae was diagnosed in 2 dogs in The Gambia. Parasites were subjected to PCR; phylogenetic analysis confirmed relatedness with branchiurans/crustaceans. Our investigation highlights transmission of infective A. armillatus ova to dogs and, by serologic evidence, also to 1 human, demonstrating a public health concern.

For the patient in our study, molecular analysis identified human pentastomiasis by using a formalinfixed microscope slide that had been stored for 7 years. A difference of 2 nt each was seen when the amplified nucleotide sequence was compared with database s...

The chest X-ray revealed multiple comma-shaped and rounded opacities in keeping with Armillifer infection, most likely Armillifer armillatus. The patient made an uneventful recovery after a...
